Transcript Week 3 DB: Data Collection. For my future teaching career, I believe that spreadsheets can be a useful tool to collect data from students. First, I will teach my students to insert the specific data in the spreadsheet and compare the results of the data collection strategies. I plan on using spreadsheets for mathematics and social studies. I also believe that Student Response Systems (SRS) software programs or combination of handheld hardware that permit each student to answer a question simultaneously can be beneficial as well. The SRS has been successful when used in science, mathematics, second language communication, and English language arts (Roblyer, M. & Hughes, J. 2019). ReplyDeleteHow does the effective teacher balance the demand of a standard-based curriculum catered to the individual needs of each student? What tools do we have at our disposal to help us comply with both demands? What best practice regarding technology in your instruction do you incorporate into your lessons?
As our textbook explains, technology has the ability to make life a little easier, and when it comes to people with disabilities, technology can make things "possible for them" (Roblyer & Hughes, 2019). The effective teacher balances the demands of a standard-based curriculum catered to the individual needs of each student in the following ways. First, the teacher must consider the student's characteristics (i.e., their abilities, needs, and preferences), their environment (i. e., the physical and instructional arrangement), and the required tasks to reach their goals. This may include utilizing assistive technology if needed. Thus, changes may be made in the curriculum in order to meet the needs of a wide range of students. The tool "universal design for learning (UDL) is flexible in presenting information for students, flexibility in student's responses or their demonstration of knowledge and skills, how students exchange, presents accommodations, supports and reduces challenges. At its goal is high achieving for all students, including students with disabilities (Roblyer & Hughes, 2019).
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is a federal educational law that offered equal opportunity for all children to be educated. This law gave states the opportunity to design accountability systems to meet this education standard. Furthermore, the states can implement their unique goals for students, and ensure the schools are held accountable for each student's achievements. Also, students with disabilities are to be assessed with needed accommodations.
The next tool we have at our disposal is technology. Some of the best technology used in schools include Read and Write Gold. This is a software program that offers support with reading (i.e., text to speech), writing (i. e., word prediction, voice recognition). Livescribe Echo Pen is another technology tool. This is a smart pen used for digital note taking, This this tool can capture the handwriting of the student in Livescribe notebooks as audio is connected to the handwritten text. I plan on implementing technology in my future instruction as a teacher by keeping the following things in mind. The goal is to create an instructionally sound and flexible environment that supports learning for students with various abilities, disabilites, interests, etc. (Jonassen, D.(Ed), Spector, M. (Ed), Driscoll, M. (Ed), Merrill, M. (Ed), van Merrien boer, J. (Ed), and Driscoll, M. (Ed). 2008).
Implementing adaptive technologies can include alternative multimedia options. I could also implement collaborative learning. This is giving the entire class the opportunity to problem-solve as a team.
